John Yong
Profile
Biography
John is currently the Associate Vice Provost (Innovation) at SIT. He leads Innohub centre and drives the Innovation as a Service (IaaS) programme in partnership with the five Polytechnics in Singapore, ITE, IPI, and A*STAR SIMTech. The programme focuses on Environmental Sustainability Innovation, Community and Allied Health, Smart Urban Solutions and Security, and Digital Innovation, leveraging technology, data analytics, and AI to drive impact.
John has been a member of the National Graduate Research Innovation Programme (NGRIP) Steering Committee since February 2025. He has also served on the SingHealth–SIT Collaboration Steering Committee since 2025, where he currently holds the position of Co-Chair of the Applied Research and Innovation Sub-Committee. In addition, he serves as Vice-Chair of the ASEAN Sub-Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation Ecosystem.
John served as Chairman of the Manufacturing Standards Committee under the Singapore Standards Council and as a member of the Singapore Standards Council from 2017 to 2026. He also served as a member of the Coordinating Committee for Smart Nation under the Singapore Standards Council since 2017.
John has more than 29 years of experience in light alloy research, particularly on aluminium, magnesium alloys and its composites. His area of interest includes liquid forging and casting of non-ferrous material, magnesium bulk and sheet forming, processing of metal matrix composites, bio and nanostructured materials.
John and his research team were awarded the 2008 National Technology Award for their contribution to the development of liquid forging technology. He also received the Singapore National Academy of Science Young Scientist of the Year Award in 2004 for his research on novel manufacturing processes for light weight metal, as well as the Lord Austin prize by The Institute of Electrical Engineers in 1997 for his research on magnesium alloy.
